Hexham Book Festival was delighted to welcome a great diversity of authors this year including Germaine Greer, Stuart Maconie and Simon Hoggart. Highlights of fiction events included appearances by Salley Vickers and Helen Dunmore, HBF's first commissioned piece; a short story 'Northern Rocks' written and performed/read by Stella Duffy and Shelley Silas, (you can read 'Northern Rocks' by following this link).
Our exciting Children's Festival attracted a large number of boys to Tom Palmer's Football inspired 'Funday' celebrating the publishing of his new novel for 9 year olds and over whilst Debi Gliori entranced a host of children with her illustrated talk, plans are now afoot to extend this area of the Festival.
We were also pleased to welcome two new strands to this year’s Festival; Michael Chaplin talking about the art of adapting novels for screen and two Graphic Novelists; Bryan Talbot and Simone Lia (who also signed her books at Baltic bookshop).
Another first for the Festival this year was a double event held at The Garden Station, Langley where two very respected authors of non-fiction talked about their Horticulture related books in another sell out event.
Poetry was a fine example of contrasts with Simon Armitage and The Poetry Slam appearing on the same afternoon, there was a fantastic turn out for both, particularly the Poetry Slam as it is something of a new venture for a Hexham audience. The varied age range of the contestants and audience was a testament to the accessibility and originality of such an event.
New partnerships with other regional organisations this year included joint events with Seven Stories, Forum Cinema, Baltic Centre for Contemporary Art, Theatre Sans Frontieres, Northumberland Libraries, The Garden Station and the NHS.
The Big Pix / Art Angel is a Web site featuring the iconic Angel of the North. You will see and hear many authors at this new site created by one of HBF's supporters.
